Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
